DECLARATION TO PRESERVE THE MISSION OF CAMP RISING SUN

November 24, 2014

Dear Alumni & Friends,

We hope that you will sign this Declaration - not because it is perfect or you endorse every single word, but because the overall Spirit of the Declaration conveys the essence of what Freddy Jonas was trying to accomplish in his single-sex leadership program for teenagers in an intimate, rustic setting in the Hudson Valley.  Thank you.

"We the undersigned strongly affirm our appreciation for all the work the Board of Directors does in what is the often thankless task of leading the Louis August Jonas Foundation. Still, in light of the current decision to sell the Camp Rising Sun properties and to make program changes, we the undersigned advocate a return to George E. Jonas’s original vision whereby we reaffirm the following fundamental guiding principles:

1.  Preservation of the Foundation's financial assets and physical properties.

2.  Survival of the LAJF Mission to continue the simultaneous operation of a 7-week summer program at both its existing boys and girls camps in their present locations in Dutchess County, New York.

We put forward the following six Resolutions:

Resolved. Fiduciary Responsibility. We call on the LAJF Board not to engage in "deficit financing" beyond the 5.5% of the three-year rolling average of the value of the Endowment.  A 5.5% limit was the Board's practice for decades and is common practice in other public charities.  In order to restore the financial health of LAJF, deficit financing may require spending even less than 5.5% of the Endowment.  Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

Resolved. Governance. This crisis has highlighted the need for a new governance structure.  At present, membership to the board is by invitation only.  We call for a system which would provide a measure of accountability and guarantee all alumni of Camp Rising Sun to be automatically enfranchised as “Members” of the governing structure with voting privileges and at no cost. We call for a system under which Directors of the LAJF are elected by the “Members” of the CRS alumni community on a regular cycle and through a process to be decided by an alumni wide inclusive deliberation.  Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

Resolved. No Asset Sale.   We call on the LAJF Board to reverse the decision to sell the camp sites.  We request the Board to provide alumni with all the due diligence reports that were the basis of the decision to sell and to end operations at their present locations. These grounds are much more than the current address for some abstract set of principles. These places are intertwined with the people who experienced the program.  They are Camp Rising Sun itself -- the land on which we held our Councils and our Vigils, carved our names and crafted our legacies, as essential to our collective identity as any college quadrangle or town square.   We shall preserve them above all, and expand beyond them only after they are secured and the alumni body is prepared to move forward collectively. Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

Resolved. Transparency.  We call on the LAJF Board to post the minutes of its meetings and of its Committee meetings, its budgets & reports routinely and in a timely fashion on the LAJF web site for all CRS alumnae and alumni to see. Board meetings shall be open to any Member who wishes to attend. Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

Resolved. Budget Reduction.  We call on the LAJF Board to reduce the annual budget immediately to meet the above constraints, including administrative staff cuts, the closing of the NYC office and its relocation to Dutchess County, and restriction of the camp budgets where necessary. Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

Resolved. Pledge to Support. The alumni signed hereunder pledge to support (financially and otherwise) the above plan to ensure a  season of 7 weeks at both camp sites and to subsequently bring the Camp operations back to full strength at 120 campers per year, in rejuvenated facilities, with a single-sex and full summer experience in perpetuity at both camps – not campuses. There may come a time when the LAJF is strong enough to consider an exciting "growth story" beyond 120 campers and other changes. That time is not now. Only an alumni-wide inclusive dialogue will determine if and how to implement this Resolution.

As members of the alumni body, we look forward to an open dialogue with the Board of Directors.  We pledge that as we move forward, we will conduct ourselves in the “Spirit of CRS,” responsibly and in a constructive manner.”

To begin this dialogue we respectfully request a meeting with no less than eight BOD members and no less than eight SAVE CRS members prior to the end of year holidays at a mutually convenient time.  We ask for a public response to this request no later than Friday, December 5, 2014 to be posted on the LAJF website.

We invite all LAJF Committee members and members of the Members Advisory Council (MAC) to sign this Declaration.

We especially invite those current LAJF Board members who publicly supported the October 3, 2014 announcement and perhaps felt compelled to support the decision but have since become increasingly uncomfortable with the process of the decision, the deep ramifications of the decision, and the serious damage done to the relationship between the Foundation and the Alumni.

To the Alumni Body, the above Declaration is our preliminary platform to you endorsed by the alumni noted below.  The SAVE CRS Group of Concerned Alumni welcomes and honors the experience and knowledge of our alumni base and encourages their participation to resolve our issues.

Please sign this document if you support these Resolutions.  Let us know if you want to join and help our group.  In the space below, there is room for you to express your thoughts and concerns along with your signature.  Please help us share and inform all alumni of this Declaration.  Thank you.

You can't discount the emotional and spiritual value of the RH location. Place and format matter, and I'm sure that the first cadre of female campers from '89 feel that way about Clinton. There is no reason we can't figure this out - except for the unwillingness of the board to look at alternative solutions.

Fundraising is usually based on emotion. If we lose the connection to Red Hook/Clinton and drastically change the CRS program, we will lose a vital emotional connection and MANY alums will cease giving. Outside funders (foundations, corporations) will be disinclined to give without a strong show of support from alums. Frankly, the idea of selling Red Hook and Clinton, shortening the program, and co-location is truly heartbreaking to me...

Freddie was alive and very present the summer I attnded CRS. And, while my one-on-one time with him was limited, I'm pretty sure he'd be disappointed by the current Board's actions and proud of the SAVECRS mission overall. Let's be sure all of us are guided by what we learned at camp. Let's continue to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us, and let's save CRS.

What's the point of camp if we don't have the grounds and the program changes materially? The beauty of camp is that even though as campers we are from different generations we share a common experience. What will keep us together if there is no common experience to share? Particularly around the program changes, the spirit dies and eventually camp will.

Hi
For various reasons, urgencies and committments i have not been able to put aside the time to properly digest all the discussions and arguments
in the CRS debate over the las month, although I meant to.
I also have to admit that, as I was not one of the Alumni who progressed to highly paid distinction, I have not contributed financially to the camps survival.
Those two factors mean that my qualifications to contribute to the 'debate' are weak.
However I have to say I have a lot of sympathy with the letters I got just recently which basicly I think regret the loss of the
folksy and homely CRS we knew in Freddy's time, when Sundial was erratically produced by alumni and carried our own writings.

About ten years ago I attended the CRS reunion in Poland and was heartened by the energy and enthusiasm of the younger alumni and somewhat depressed that
Freddies wider and more humanitarian vision (which recruited me as the very first British Camper from a state school, after he'd seen
a newspaper report of a demonstration by the senior students against US actions during the Cuba missile crisis) seemed to have been visibly condensed
to "leadership training". In my view Freddy's adoption of the phrase"experiment in international living" was closer to what the camp was all about.
Not leadership per se, but responsible and moral leadership and collaboration.

I have also become depressed by the relentless solicitation for funds and the way Sundial has become a marketting tool.
While I accept that funds are important and I know that the CRS funding model requires alumni funding to generate philanthropic funding
from other sources, I think the current management cannot begin to understand how much unAmerican minds can resent
advertising in general and that kind of marketting in particular. I cannot believe that the general level of IQ of our alumni would not
feel deeply insulted by being treated to such a sustained barrage of solicitation and the bending of news of the source one of the most formative
experiences of our young lives into a sustained pitch for contributions. It is better manners to ask once, politely.

I wonder also about the 2014 camp - what did they think they were doing in "construction" if any legacy contributions will be lost.
Of course I don't know, for example, if the Adirondak shelter or the trails are still maintained,
what the Ki Boan looks like now or how much of the physical legacy of the camp could be preserved.
We dont get the "alumnus edition" of Rising Sun anymore, written by campers.
Estate agents always tell us its about "Location, Location, Location", CRS probably is a location but in Poland I saw that it could be mobile and move about.
Maybe.
I couldn't get to Hungary on 2014 - I now really wish I had, I'd feel better in touch with the current spirit.

I do know that I felt more comfortable with CRS before it became so corporate and business-model driven. I don't know which side of the debate is 'right'.
I do know that voluntary organisations large and small - and I am a member of the worlds largest, the Lions Club, can easily fall into self-destructive
schisms. I have seen this sort of thing happen over and over again and it is totally distressing for those involved.
It usually occurs when one group claims ownership of a part of or the whole of the group, alienating others and internal feuding breaks out.
I have the feeling that this is happening here and the end result will be the opposite to that desired by the current management. Alumni will be 'lost'.
Being right isn't enough - you have to carry the 'membership'

What the management say must happen may be quite correct but if that is to be the case then a closer and more relaxed relationship with the alumni is essential,
more consultation, (dare i say it?) more democracy, less hectoring and solicitation. Maybe a smaller CRS for a couple of years while the options are debated and
the alumni are carried forward with necessary reforms - perhaps a reduction in the funds allocated to fund-raising might be a start.

Most of all, all of us should start
listening to Freddy again, carefully.
I did not hear his softly modulated tone in Poland, and I cannot hear it know.

With respect to all

the most important comment for this; "What would Freddie do?"

I hope that there is not a case approaching malfeasance on the part of the board that got us to today's upheaval.

I'm in sympathy with the Declaration in just about every respect and support your efforts to imagine a future for CRS that takes into account the extraordinary affection so many of us feel for the place and its history. I second all that my old friend, Bruce Douglas, has said on the subject. In 2014 I published a book (Starting from Staten Island)that includes a chapter on CRS; the alumni office in New York has a couple of copies and might lend them out. I could send more. It's also available from Amazon or Kindle.

Let's try to consider what he would do under these circumstances. Perhaps an open line of communication, such as we have here, with carefully formatted questions to be answered by all who sign this Declaration, can provide a sensible direction and allow CRS to invigorate future generations.

Please preserve the years of work and creations on the site that is the real history.
I ask all those involved to look more closely at the finances here, offloading any assets in the current market is not prudent. There are many other things that can be done to raise money, a better board with broader knowledge may assist.
Accountability is by the members and the campers who feel that they can contribute this must be open and transparent and fully accountable.

To me, CRS is firmly linked to its site. We all remember the people at Camp, campers and counselors alike, but we also remember them being at this particular place. The Old House, ED Hall, Camp Hill, the Sawkill pond and so on are inseparable from these memories. If they'd cease to be part of CRS, the CRS idea may live on somehow, but OUR CRS, the CRS of the vast majority of campers for yet a long time from now, would be gone for good.

Please preserve the location of CRS. The camp grounds is every part of the leadership experience as we all, at some point, took on the responsibility to maintain and add to grounds. There are many messages and signatures (all over the grounds) that immortalize campers presence throughout the years.

To sell the grounds is symbolic akin to destroying the history of CRS.

1) Chris Varrone points out a crucial point in his letter "My view": Before any sale/purchase takes place, thorough research should take place. 2)CRS is foremost an idea, yes. But precisely therefore, the symbolic effect of a historic location should be respected.

For hundreds of us the Red Hook camp has the very real status of being a "holy place". It is where a true "holy man" lived and taught spiritual knowledge. It is where so many had spiritual opening and experiences.

This idea, which is absolutely true to me, has been denigrated as mere "sentimentality" in certain emails. It is outrageous to so denigrate; the spirit is real and every inch of that property is soaked with it.

The very last letter I wrote to Freddie was from a very sacred and holy place in West Bengal, India. I told him of my experiences there. He wrote back to me at that very place a most wonderful, kind, and understanding reply. He knew what I was talking about.

Some way must be found to preserve that place.

The environment of growth, mutual respect and admiration, creativity, and responsibility was extremely empowering for me. I am most concerned to maintain the length of the summer and the gender separation. It was definitely in the last four weeks of the summer that I felt the magic of ownership of our experience and of deep relationships. I fear girls will step up less in a mixed environment. It is SO powerful, especially as a teenage woman, to see all leadership roles filled by women! Being in a girls-only environment allowed me to be in relationships where I felt treasured for my intellect and my heart, and I felt that my body was a precious vehicle for my 'self'. This was in HIGH contrast to the emphasis on physical appearance that I felt in other environments during middle school and high school. I fear the experience of not-judging-based-on-bodies will be diminished for campers in a mixed-gender environment. I recognize that this support for gender separation is hetero-centric; and at the same time, it was huge for me, and I want to preserve that opportunity for others. Thank you to all those who are working to the preservation of camp and the perpetuation of this precious experience!

I AGREE WITH THE DECISION TO PRESERVE THE MISSION AND SITE FOR CRS.WE VEERED OFF WHEN WE STARTED PROMOTING LAJF OVER CRS. AS TO THE SPENDING, I HAVE ALWAYS QUESTIONED THE RATIONALE BEHIND THE EXPENSIVE OFFICE IN DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN AMONG OTHER DECISIONS THAT PUT A STRAIN ON THE FINANCES BUT HAVE NOTHING DIRECTLY TO DO WITH THE 8 WEEKS OF CAMP. I BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WISHING TO SERVE IN THE CRS COMMUNITY MUST EMBRACE ITS TRADITION INCLUDING THE SETTING IN DUTCHESS COUNTY. I HAVE TEN YEARS OF MY LIFE IN SERVICE AT CRS/R AND THINGS WORKED FROM THE SMALL OFFICE IN RHINEBECK.GOING "GLOBAL"/ "MODERN" ETC DOESNT MEAN CHANGING WHO YOU ARE. Wish to reiterate my previous comments on the other petition that at a minimum, alunni deserve to see all the math behind behind the decision to sell the historic grounds. Surely there is a way to preserve the site for permanent use, which could include: off-season rentals and education programs, more sophisticated fund-raising, and improved publicity.

With the knowledge we have to work with, it still doesn't add up that the foundation is without funds to repair and renovate the historic site, while the foundation overhead appears to be bloated. The overhead of successful non-profits do not exceed about 20% of the total budget.

In addition to signing this petition, I look forward to pledging as much support as I can give to the Foundation in achieving its objectives, including (but not limited to) volunteering as a counselor for one or more seasons in the next 5-10 years. Indeed, the alumni counselors helped make my experience at CRS the life-changing experience it was for me; and I can think of no better way of fulfilling Freddy's legacy than passing some of the spirit imbued to me to future campers.

I spent three of the most formative years of my life at CRS 72,73,and 74 years ago. My intense memories of those years are inextricably intertwined with the barn, tent hill, the council grounds, the Sawkill, the big house and the "willy". The thought of "disposing" of them for some "modern" vacation facility is tormenting and self-destructive to me. ONLY those of us who experienced the intimacy of the experience, the response to Freddie's admonition to pick "twenty weeds" and sitting and arguing under the catalpa tree can really understand how we all feel about selling that site and , even more important, limiting the summer to less than seven weeks. I've not been back more than once every ten years, but the thought that it won't be there any more would disturb me more than I can imagine! We're not talking about a Hilton Hotel----
We're fighting to preserve a part of each one of us that simply can't be transported elsewhere!

I am so delighted and heartened by this outpouring of support for the preservation of the heart of CRS. I responded to the announcement of the Board's decision with measured if not resigned support, while asking what in their stated plans would be done to preserve all that I take to be the heart of the CRS experience. So much is tied to geography and localized tradition. I received no response and felt very much alone . Now I see that others feel as I did. I am particularly pleased to see among signatories people I knew during my era at camp (mid 1950's). CRS has been an indelible part of my life story. The Board decision threatens to erase it, belying the words of the CRS "anthem": "...on the banks of the winding Sawkill, there's always a welcome for you." (I realize that this pertains only to the boys' camp, but that has been my experience at CRS. I assume that the campers at the girls' camp have had similar experiences and attachments.)
I am not unreasonable about financial realities. But I am very loathe to blindly endorse a decision that has such profound ramifications for the core of the CRS experience and traditions...especially now when I discover that alumni have been left largely out of the loop. I would not want to use the word "hijacking" to describe what is happening, but at the very least, the Board has misjudged alumni sentiment and mismanaged this admittedly serious problem. I strongly urge a moratorium on the
decision, during which time the Board, together with alumni representatives from all eras, can parley about the appropriate course to take to deal with the financial problems and to deal with an obvious problem with Louis-August Jonas Foundation governance of CRS. If called upon, I would willingly participate in this.

A shout out to all fellow campers from around the early and mid 1950's!

Peter Kahn

Comments:
Physically moving the RH camp site, shortening the camp season, and the intransigence and lack of transparency and accountability of the Board are all unacceptable. With the urgency of the present fiscal situation now so apparent, much more money should be raisable by and through alumni, alumnae, and other sources. WITH SO MANY THOUSANDS OF SUPER-CITIZEN BENEFICIARIES IN OUR RANKS, THERE HAVE TO BE ENOUGH IDEAS AND TANGIBLE SOURCES OF MONEY TO START BAILING US OUT NOW.

I'm going to be very honest, as no one else would dare to be, on the subject of a girls' camp. I remember when Freddie first broached the idea to me in a one-on-one conversation, and I responded, "Can the LAJF afford it?". He looked puzzled and acted as though that was not an issue at all. Well, think about it, my fellow alumni, and join me in acknowledging that CRS is into the co-ed idea to stay; but the girls have got to do their share (as we alumni have to do our share) to support Freddie's decision (and it was, finally, his decision) to go the co-ed route. I'm sure that it is going to be inflammatory for me to say so, but the present situation would probably not have occurred if that idea had never arisen. Nita Luis' generosity aside for the moment, we need all Rising Sons and Daughters to acknowledge that a large amount of money was invested in them when they were in their early teens, and they should feel a responsibility to pay as much of it back, tax free, over time, as possible-------- and it's not too early, as sloon alate to start, "boys" and "girls" both included. That's something that the alumni/ae association should be raising with its "members", not something that the Camp or the Foundation should be requesting.

WE ALL TOOK IT FOR GRANTED THAT FREDDIE AND HIS FATHER HAD LEFT ENOUGH MONEY TO KEEP CRS ALIVE IN PERPETUITY! WELL, WHAT DO YOU KNOW? WE ARE BEING REMINDED THAT MONEY DOESN'T GROW ON CATALPA TREES, IN FRONT OF THE 'BIG HOUSE' OR ANYWHERE ELSE!

This camp changed my life. Because of it, I know that peace is an achievable goal, and that no matter the artificial obstacle -- race, class, country of origin -- love can overcome it.

Though I believe the search for a new CRS campground is not ideal, I raise a stronger objection to the shortening of the camp season. It takes four weeks to build trust. Weeks five and six are the "breakthrough" weeks.

I hope you will consider the words of CRS alumnae as camp goes through this challenging time.

Yours truly,
Beth

I believe that we all agree on the Board's decision for the financial sustainability of CRS. However, the Board's extraordinary proposal definitely requires some more time of deliberation, with the expectation of coming up with at least two more alternatives on which the alumni could pass their judgement. I see a great interest on the part of many alumni to help with more ideas. The group mind could come up with unexpected alternatives, or so I hope. Therefore I urge the Board to give to the problem of CRS more time for the consideration of new ideas.

In my life, people have often asked "if this is such a good idea, then why doesn't someone else do it" To which I have said, "I am someone else!" This has been true for me in my hobby, oil painting, and also owning a real estate brokerage, owning a photo company, and a construction management company.

Trusting my own opinions and working well with others are traits that I feel developed within myself and flourished through my involvement with CRS.

I think the Board has a tough task, and can benefit from a managed conversation with the other former Board members, volunteers, donors, and dignified and wonderful Alums who have endeavored to strengthen CRS for the next 100 years by so agreeing to and accepting the above.

Comments:
No evidence which has been made available to the alumni list so far convinces me that a property sale and a move to another location, even another state, offers a solution to the Camps' financial problems.

The decision whether or not to sell and move must be made after more information is made available,
AND ALUMNI MUST HAVE A DIRECT WAY TO VOTE ON THE DECISION.

If, in fact, real estate prices are so disparate between Dutchess County and other locations we all need to see credible evidence. And if there are measurable savings possible because of differing state or local regulations, taxes, and utility costs, the alumni need to see the data.
And any differences in regulations are moot if CRS cannot in good conscience operate a less safe, less environmentally "green" Camp.

As a professional urban planner I suspect that just as many retired couples find when they go to sell the house and move to a condo, THEY DON'T FREE UP A LOT OF CASH AFTER ALL!

My heart says we should stay will the current sites if we can come up with a financial plan to do so--to me "Camp Rising Sun" is the Old
House and other additions over the years.
If that is not feasible, we need very good evidence on all sides of the case. My brain
says that we do need a feasible financial plan,
and I am prepared to contribute more each year
than I have in recent years--given the "audited" facts of the case.

I have been silent now for 40+ years (ever since Freddie's damnatio memoriae of my 60s generation), but this is really too much to take in silence. Maybe the Board *should* dissolve the old camp, and with it a crucial tie to 80 years of alumni, but it should certainly NOT ignore this groundswell of opposition to its plan. I don't know if I agree or not with the proposal, but I most definitely disagree with this pose of business as usual and a fund-raising appeal that is at best disingenuous and at worst...well, let others decide what to call it.

Much of the spirit and many of our dearest memories are deeply attached to the places where we experienced the magic of CRS, and that echoes in our souls even after decades have passed. The reaction of so many of us is quite understandably emotional, just like my own. Yet the world has changed and there might be strong reasons indeed to start writing a new chapter. I would therefore urge the Board to meet with representatives of the large group of Alumni who like myself tend to oppose the changes and try to work out collectively, just as we would have done sitting around the fire back then, the very best solution to ensure the continuity of Camp and preserve its essence. A sincere and creative brainstorming might prove to produce a consensus type solution including ingredients no one would have bet beforehand that they could combine successfully.

If there is no way to "make camp happen" other than moving it elsewhere, then that might ultimately be the painful decision to take.
But if this issue is not discussed thoroughly with all the concerned alumni, then there is no way of taking Camp anywhere else.
Its ghost will remain in Red Hook/Clinton for the larger part of the community, while others will be mimicking camp in Pennsylvania.
There will be no Camp Rising Sun anymore.

I was a water front counselor in 1952 and 1953 and a member of the Board of Directors named by Freddie in the late 1950s. I knew him well.

Freddie was not a stick in the mud and was willing to try new ideas and change with the times. He would be pleased with the vibrancy and concern shown by many alumni as CRS is at a point of some crisis.

I was a judge for over twenty five years and have a deep feeling for the requirement of due process before decisions are made. It seems to me that a decision of the magnitude recommended by the Board of Directors needs buy in and approval of the alumni as a whole. Although the Harvard Corporation could legally decide to move the university from Cambridge Mass to some other location as a matter of cost savings and convenience, such a move would cause the kind of convulsion that CRS is witnessing now.

It is essential to step back and look at the situation in a transparent way. Otherwise, what Freddie stood for and worked so hard to build stands a good chance of being permanently ruptured

If I can be of further assistance please let me know.

I was very moved by the thoughtful comments here and on the Petition. I completely agree that corporatism appears to be crowding out camp philosophy. The CRS Web site is full of phrases like "professional consultants," "endowment performance," and my personal favorite, "lower regulatory burden."

I also think David Dinneen's comments about the relationship between University Faculty and Administration are very apt.

It's difficult to picture Freddie talking this way. If he had, he might have stayed in the hat business. I thank you all for lifting me out of the funk I got into when I first heard of the planned sales.

Sale of the existing properties should occur only as a last resort. While the idea of Camp Rising Sun, a community recreated each year, can certainly be transplanted, for the hundreds of alumni who actively support the Foundation, Camp is also a specific physical place. Over the years, many of us who experienced CRS at Red Hook or Clinton have been able to return, to see how succeeding campers have changed and been changed by the place that we found so compelling. Cutting our ties to these places will assuredly diminish alumni connection to and support of CRS.

I also agree with those who have spoken against any shortening of the Camp program. Building the Camp community and giving campers the chance to become part of the larger history of Rising Sun requires more than a quick 4 weeks. It probably took me at least that long to begin to understand and feel a part of Camp; if I'd had to leave at that point, Camp would be just a minor episode from my past and I doubt I would ever have felt the need to revisit or support it.

I am generally supportive of the Board and respect their role and admire the time, dedication and resources with which they meet their responsibilities. I am on the Investment & Finance Committee and have been for many years, during which I have pointed out the financial crisis that loomed ahead and unsuccessfully urged action to meet the obvious shortfall between expenditures and income. I have been an annual donor for decades, more recently in the four or even five digit category.

I sign this petition because I think the decisions reached by the Board are so far-reaching and potentially disruptive that some more time ought to be given to dialogue with the alumni and to consideration of all alternatives. There are values to continuity and while we know the costs of the present camps we don't really know the true costs of a move, both tangible and intangible.

Given the concern of so many thoughtful and dedicated alumni, I think the board ought to declare a moratorium on its decision, and devote a year to dialogue and review. What is one year for a hopefully perpetual organization with a lofty mission if we can gain a fuller consensus and perhaps avoid irreparable mistakes?

In signing the petition I want to make clear that I do not agree with all of its provisions.

In particular I do not believe in having the board elected by the alumni. Perhaps adding one alumni elected member is a good idea, but in general the thoughtful and deliberate process of putting together a balanced board as presently is the case is by far the best approach, and election by a disparate membership is doomed to failure as other broad membership organizations have discovered.

Also, I am not adverse to moving camp, to selling off some (or even all) of the properties, or changing the nature of the camp experience to fit contemporary and future realities, but only after a more deliberate and consultative process.

My biggest issue at the moment lies with the confusing combination of first shortening the camps to four weeks and at the same time talking about increasing the amount of campers in the future. I strongly believe that 7 weeks is the minimum, I personally preferred the previous 8 week program. I also feel that 60 campers is a sufficient amount since if the number gets bigger it will also require more resources and it will not ensure the formation of such close knit community. As has been discussed intensively during the past couple of months, the communication between the board and the alumni should be improved first in order to regain trust before any of these future steps can be taken.

Board's decision two months ago to sell Red Hook started the biggest CRS reunion ever. Let's use this incredible energy to save the Camp as we know it!!!

CRS is about quality, not quantity. No savings should be made by reducing the number of counselors, inviting more campers, shortening the season (who doesn't get to be the Sachem of the Day?), or collocating the two Camps.

Instead, we should save by giving up the expensive and so far futile efforts to spin up external fundraising, and return to our roots for another 85 years of following Freddie's vision. Let's do it together!

Greetings.

I've been watching with dismay and disappointment as suggestions have surfaced that the best way to save CRS is, to paraphrase an analogous proposal made of a village in the Vietnam war, to destroy it, and to reincarnate it in another state.

Certainly part of what makes CRS the unique Freddy creation that it is are the ethical principles that guide the daily lives of its campers.

But another part, and equally important in my view, is the geographic and physiognomic structure of the terrain -- land, waters, buildings -- of the actual camp grounds, the "ancestral homeland", if you will.

With no Willy House, with no Louise Falls, with no Council Ring or Sawkill Swimming Hole, with no Tent Hill, what will there be left of
the physical corpus of Camp Rising Sun? Can any of that be resuscitated in a relocated camp, reincarnated elsewhere? (I'd fear not.)

Do know that I stand with you for a more conservative, "let's not just burn all our bridges behind us" approach to the CRS financial pickle than the current board of (untrustworthy) trustees seems to wish to follow.

Cheers, and best of luck in having your viewpoint prevail,

If current board remains intransigent, and cannot be stopped by legally wresting management from them, move to raise funds to buy current properties from them and found a new "Camp Freddie" to continue GEJ's work in traditional fashion at the traditional location(s).

I agree with everything written in the Petition and Declaration. Above all I am outraged at the lack of transparency and accountability of this Board of Directors and agree with the call for a new, more inclusive structure of governance. I hope the Board will listen to this call. Unfortunately, under the current anti-democratic system, we can only hope, and take hopeful actions like signing the Petition and Declaration and raising our voices as loud as possible. I am encouraged by the outpouring of support this effort has brought about and hope it will build and lead to a true renaissance of CRS.

Comments:
Although I have lived abroad for 48 years, I find it very regrettable if the historic buildings were to be demolished and the land eventually would be subdivided by developers. "Progress" like this doesn't have to be inevitable. I also feel left out of the decision making process. I heard very little about the foundation's dire straits before late October. Until then, my impression was that apart from some unfortunate investments in 2008, the foundation still had a relatively solid base.

Fortyfive years has past from my experience at CRS.
I met several times Freddie also in Italy. He has a lot of significant, and perhaps, utopistic dreams. But people like him, and his philosophy, are a treasure for the world, even today. And I can say that for me that time spent in CRS ha been unforgettable and important for my life. I am still in contact with some campers. And just this is a great goal.

What should have been a memorable leadership teaching moment for our international leadership camp became a poorly timed, poorly executed and unintentionally disenfranchising debacle. While I appreciate the financial concerns surrounding LAJF, I continue to be lost at the "urgency" of the current official plan of action, the mystery shrouding the "solution", and the continuing difficulty being had in earnest, exhaustive communication with alumni. I am very, very worried about what is coming next.

Although I find some aspects of this petition too prescriptive, I do endorse the general sentiment that:
1. The Red Hook and Clinton sights should be kept by LAJF
2. If one.site needs to be sold, it should NOT be historic RH.
3. The Camp season should be at least 7 weeks long.
4. That if only RH is preserved, there should be full- season single-sex camps in alternating years.
5. That LAJF overhead expenses should be severely curtailed.

I was a camper in the mid forties, a counselor (mainly music) for years after that, and Camp director (under Freddie, who really was the director) throughout most of the fifties -- at camp for ELEVEN SUMMERS in all. Ever since Freddie died, I have been interested in how well CRS has flourished, for I thought that it was sustained very much by him alone. I understand and feel your sentiments about the place and the experience, and I heartily agree with your wish to diminish all fancy expenses. I am happy to see that you have not referred to the so-called "philosophy" of camp. In my adult life I have come to the conclusion that the ideals of camp are decent sentiments that were fueled by Freddie's remarkable single-mindedness. The benefits of camp are, in my opinion, those of bringing together smart and interesting teen-agers (from all over) who formed some lasting friendships. But I am, in retrospect ashamed of (for example) council talks in which I seriously and sentimentally spouted nonsense. Certainly I went on spending my summers at camp for far too long. Though almost every inch of the Rhinebeck acres are dear to my memory, I cannot sign the Declaration. My refusal derives from my unwillingness, in my old age, to support the empty language that is redolent of the nineteen-thirties.

Camp Rising Sun isn't just a place where part of our lives happened - it is integral to what happened during a part of our lives. The time I spent at Camp Rising Sun is so precious, and to think that future generations can not re-live some of the best times I had is so disheartening. The camp grounds itself was such a big part in fostering such a strong brotherhood and making an enriching experience, not to mention its amazing history. Without it the experience would never be the same.

Additionally, I served on the Program Committee chaired by John Reiner for about 5 years, as well as several years on the Selection Committee. Six years after being told to leave camp by the LAJF ED through a new CD, I know many of the actors in this passion play. During my last year of 2008, staff training boasted that “counselors could be fired for any reason at any time,” which proved true in my case. By my account, LAJF owes me money for breaking its contract. But after singing, “There’s always a welcome for you” for so many seasons since 1979, and really believing it, I easily recognize the disenfranchisement suffered by the alum by the loss of the physical Rising Sun in favor of the supposed franchising of an adaptive Rising Sun Program by the LAJF Board.

I strongly believe that there is a lot that can be done apart from selling the two properties in which thousands of memories were made, which I believe we all still treasure. The decision to sell the properties is somehow in my perspective unfair because it was only taken by a small group of people and did not include everyone who really cares about CRS .An abundance of our alumni are learnered people in different fields of work who can come together and find a way out that could be beneficial to everyone concerned although it might be hard for participation of international alumni especially the younger ones.I really hope the LAJF reconsiders their decision and does not sell neither RedHook nor Clinton.

Under no circumstances should land be disposed of nor the camp be co-ed, nor the program be truncated, nor the BOD be allowed to violate the 51/2% rolling average guidelines unless reimbursed withinn 2 years ( 1/4% should be set aside for emergency as before), all financials should be circulated as raw unaudited items, BOD Governance should be re-examined for transparency and accessibility to outside ideas preferably including votes, etc. etc.

While the Camp Rising Sun program can be run in many different venues, and I can conceive of situations where selling the existing sites could be justified, I have not been convinced that the current financial situation of the Foundation warrants such an extreme action at this time - especially in light of the overwhelming Alumni reaction to the New Dawn announcement. Let's work to find a strategic plan that preserves the camps as they are.

The board has raised the alarm, like never before, about camps financial situation and the alumni are ready to respond. To be told that only those that have been big donors to camp are to have a say, goes against the spirit of CRS. As an inclusive camp, we cannot shun a majority of camp voices, just because they don't have the big $ to donate to camp. Many donate time by sitting on committees, doing home visits, helping set up camp. While CRS is more than RH and Clinton, the grounds and history play a big part of who camp is. I appreciate those who have come before me and I would like to leave it to those who come after me.

My summer at Camp Rising Sun was a transformative experience, and I want future camp seasons to make friendships and memories like I did. I support the board of directors but I do agree with the changes asked for in this declaration. The SaveCRS petition is too emotional and irrational, but this declaration clearly sets forth achievable objectives that we can accomplish as a community if we come together to make them happen.

I deeply appreciate the work the current board and all former boards have been doing. But i sign, because we need to revise our systems and need to recreate a joint goal. I am not perse against an asset sale, but the finances, technology, will and need are there now to change towards a more open and democratic organization. Such an organization will be able to take decisions as a democratically choosen body and therefor hopefully have a bigger share of the alumni behind them.

I have followed the discussions and read the documents and engaged in dialogue. Yet I cannot see why we cannot save the current sites. The more I question and the more I read, the more I am convinced that the decisions to sell the original sites and redesign the program are not grounded in good faith. These changes stray much too far from the original vision for Camp Rising Sun, and I cannot support them.

Needless to say, I appreciate the hard work the board has done and many personal, dear friends of mine have worked on the official decisions.

On my own behalf, I'm not as strictly opposed to the selling of the properties if that is what really needs to be done. Both campsites mean a lot to me as physical places, and for the history's and heritage's sake I would like to see these places preserved. Anyhow, in my opinion the CRS experience can happen anywhere - so my personal view regarding that particular point is not as strict as stated here.

Still, I'm supporting the declaration, as I'm concerned that the official process that is going on now will not preserve the core of CRS.

I'm strongly opposed to shortening the camp periods to four weeks. Having experienced CRS as a "foreign" camper, for whom it first took a couple of weeks to get an idea of what was going on and, for three summers, as a counselor observing the community as it develops, I think it is absolutely essential to preserve the length as it is now.

Although I'm not for every single thing demanded in the document, I show my support to these concerned thoughts as it is our camp, too. During my time as an alumna (25 years) the decision making processes in the LAJF have appeared complicated, not very transparent and at times even secretive. I'm also signing because of the feeling that my (that goes for many other alumni outside the US as well) countless volunteer hours for my local alumni association are not as worthy as if I was able to cold cash. I'm signing to show my support for an alternative resolution and for at least a little more transparency and visible democracy in the future.

I support these resolutions as guiding principles, understanding that it may not actually be possible to do all of these things and ensure that camp survives. If it is not possible, then we probably have no other choice to take many, if not all, of the extraordinary steps that the Board has contemplated. I believe we should give the alumni a chance to support (financially and otherwise) a plan that would allow CRS to operate within the constraints of these resolutions.

November 15th I was asked to sign my name to two different petitions/campaigns in support of CRS. One was asking for money, the other was asking for change.

I sign in support of change as I sign the «Declaration to preserve the mission». While I do not agree with absolutely everything, I agree that the ultimate goal is to preserve the mission. I would like to point out that I do not agree with the specific point about Asset Sale. I believe the mission can live on anywhere, be it at Clinton, Stendis or in Pennsylvania.

As others have stated, there is no turning back. I can only speak for myself, but I can not accept today's lack of transparency and accountability. In particular, I find the practice of paying an annual price of $10k to be a part of the board as appalling.

If there is not substantial change, I am not sure I can be a part of this organization anymore. Such is the divide between what I believe this organization should be like and where it apparently is today.

While I do not share the view expressed in this Declaration that the existing campuses should not be sold under any circumstances, I join the signatories because I believe that the decision to sell Red Hook campus has been made with too much haste. The decision will make many alumni feel disengaged and unwilling to continue supporting the program. More time is needed to communicate the reasons behind the decision. I agree with the Declaration that some of the reasons need to be reassessed. I agree that the program must continue consisting of 7-8 week camps in order to be worthy of the name Camp Rising Sun. Finally, I agree that a much higher degree of transparency is needed from the part of the Board in the future in order to keep the alumni body engaged.

I believe we can come together as a community to honor both the past and the future of CRS...as leaders and servants, through peaceful conversations and spirited debates. We will have to think outside the box, as we are living in different times from those of Freddy's days. Sustainability is key. What do we really NEED to "make Camp happen"? We all have something to offer, be it physical, intellectual, emotional, financial...how can we use our gifts collectively to continue giving others the experience of a full CRS season?
